Q: How do I select an aluminum dock plate?
Dock plates are used to level the height differences between a loading dock and a truck. There are a variety of sizes, materials, and load ratings to consider when buying a dock plate.
First thing to consider is the load rating you will need. Remember to include both the weight of the pallets you will be unloading as well as the equipment you will be using to to move the pallet such as a forklift or pallet jack. It is also a good idea to add 50% to this load for a safety margin.
There are basically 2 material types to consider: aluminum and steel. Aluminum dock plates are generally used for loads under 5,000 lbs and steel for over 5000 lbs. The main advantage to aluminum dock plates is their lighter weight allows them to be moved by 1 person.
When considering the size, remember to add atleast 6 inches to either side on the width and atleast 12 inches to the width.

Q: How do I select wheel chocks?
There are several different types of wheel chocks to consider. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
- Laminated Rubber Wheel Chocks are a great choice due to their long life. They are typically made from recycled cord reinforced rubber which provides a strong grip on concrete or paved surfaces. These tend to be very heavy.
- Rubber Wheel Chocks are a lower priced nylon reinforced molded rubber which also provides strong grip traction. Rubber resists tearing, abrasion, and weathering, Safety engineered to prevent sliding. Complete with cadmium plated eyebolt.
- Molded Rubber Chocks provide the maximum traction between tires and parking surfaces. This makes this chock useful on just about any many surface. Stair-Step edges or serration grip tire and prevent movement without gouging or cutting.
- Extruded Rubber Chock, these are similar to molded rubber wheel chocks. The adhesion increases as pressure increases on the chock to improve traction. Ideal for trailers, airplanes, and small trucks. Double as safety wedge to keep drums, paper rolls, and cylinders from rolling.
- Airplane Wheel Chock Set. This set is actually very popular for use with trucks as well. Polypropylene rope with reflectors connect the chocks and provide excellent visibility.
- Molded plastic wheel chocks have become popular recently due to their low prices. However, these chocks are a poor choice because they are too light in weight and will slide. Also, their durability is very poor.
- Aluminum wheel chocks are a good solution to provide extremely high durability with lower weight. These tend to be more expensive.
